The distribution of housing in London has had a mosaic pattern. Social housing and council estates sit next to town houses and private squares. The city is now going through a phase of regeneration not seen on such a scale since the reconstruction after the War. Areas targeted for regeneration are some of London's poorest and most deprived. The repercussions of this are changing both the social and physical landscape of the city. Sections of London are becoming unaffordable to vast amounts of the population. Battersea/ Nine elms

‘The main function of hoardings is to delineate the area between the construction site and public areas,’ Site hoardings disrupt the landscape and the way in which the viewer interacts with an environment. The images capture the spaces flux between its future, current and past states. Playing with the way the image is read, the layers interact in a way that questions each ones validity, purpose and possible absurdity. The images use the hoardings as a device to break up and disrupt our reading of them, echoing the way it breaks our engagement with the space.

Stonegrove Estate

The Stonegrove estate is a council estate in Edgware, built on the edge of greenbelt land during the 60s and 70s. The estate is made up of medium and low rise blocks containing 603 homes. It is currently being cleared block by block and demolished to make way for new housing. The current residents are being moved off the estate to make way for ‘ 937 new homes, about a third of which will be for rent, half for sale and the remainder for low-cost home ownership’ (Barnet Council) One resident told me that the old estate was roughly 80% social rented housing, whereas the new mix will possibly only have about 20%.

Playing with the way the image is read, the layers interact in a way that questions each ones validity, purpose and possible absurdity. The title is a comment about the history and social exclusivity of the construction taking place.
